research and planning: contents page what I have done so far

This is the beginning of my content page. I have started doing this on In design because I thought it might be easier. I have started putting my pictures in as you can see I have put Vivien at the right hand corner. This is were I want her the layout of the magazine content may change as I progress though it.

Pop Artist C.D Cover:

The most obvious difference between these C.D covers is the colour of them, from the pop and the indie rock covers. The other thing which is really noticeable is the facial expression of each of the artists.


Colour:  The colour of the Katy Perry cover, is very vibrant, and really colourful, additionally so is the One Direction cover, this is to grab the customers attention when buying it and also to stand out from the rest of the C.D covers. Whereas in the indie/rock C.D cover they are dark colours, and use of a lot of red, black, grey and white. This is to show aggression, fierce and death, these are what I feel these colours represent.  


Mese En Scene: The clothing of the 2 C.D covers are also different, especially the One Direction cover and the All Time Low one because the All Time Low one is wearing formal clothing; shirt, tie and suits in the album cover. They are also wearing black, white and grey coloured clothing as well. Whereas the One Direction, are wearing bright colours such as; light blue, light green and white, and casual clothing which is the type of clothing they are wearing on their album cover. 


The lighting is really bright and it gives you a happy feeling when you look at the pop album covers. Also straight away from the lighting you can tell its pop as well. The album cover gives out that it’s upbeat and unique to any other artists. Whereas the lighting in the Indie/rock album covers in really low and dim and there isn't allot of back light, and looks really depressing, but also looks unusual. There is a little bit of lighting on the All Time Low album cover on the main guy, who is opening a bottle of Champaign.

Mese en scene:  The clothing of the R&B cover is very limited especially on the 'super club' one. This is to get the readers eye. Also the hairstyle on the women on both the R&B covers are long curly (on the super club one) or straight long hair (winter heat). This catches the reader’s attention. I have also noticed that in the R&B covers there are a lot of people, unlike the Indie/ rock covers. The Eliza Doolittle uses the childish theme for her album cover because her music is very happy and gives you a good feeling when you listen to it. The theme also appeals to her target audience, which is young people aged between 14-24 but because of the colours and the extreme colour contrast it could have a target audience of younger people as well.  I believe that the album cover is saying buy me and escape to Eliza Doolittle’s island. Whereas in the super club album, they seem to be really serious and not really enjoying it, whereas Eliza Doolittle comes across as being happy and full of life.

The Eliza Doolittle uses the childish theme for her album cover because her music is very happy and gives you a good feeling when you listen to it. The theme also appeals to her target audience, which is young people aged between 14-24 but because of the colours and the extreme colour contrast it could have a target audience of younger people as well.  I believe that the album cover is saying buy me and escape to Eliza Doolittle’s island.

I quiet like The NME layout because of the headline and it really easy and quick to read and you can have a look at which type you want to look at. I also like how they have also used the same colour scheme like Q did, and also the red arrow at the bottom right hand page, which stands out because it makes the reader read it. Also the main picture in the middle of stands out from the rest of the page because it’s so big and the story is   a cliff hanger you want to read more about it and it finishes in awkward point which compels you to read on. I also like how they have at the bottom left were you can by so many NME  magazines, and save a certain amount of money. The colours are really eye catching but will have to change the yellow to red because it will totally defeat my 3 colour scheme

In Q I really like how they have a big picture which grabs your attention, and a smaller one with reviews. The content page is on the left hand side which is how I want mine to be, but with the Kerrang pictures are laid out. I also like how they have what is coming up in the next month at the bottom of it with a red banner across it which stands out from the column. I also like how they are using the same colour scheme as what I am intended to use though out my magazine. I like how they have their masthead on the content page, but I think I might not do this for mine because my masthead is too long to put it as well as writing content as well, I don't think it would look as good.

research and planning: analise of a Kerrang content page

I want to have my content page like this because it’s loud and it's really laid out. I like how they have put the headlines for example gigs and the interview on, and they are all laid out so that if you want to read that type of headline then they are all next to each other in the magazine.

I have also noticed that there are 71 pages which is a lot, but they are all tightly packed together in one column I want mine content pages all in one column but on the left hand side so that it looks different and unique to. I want to make my content like this one because I like how they have put pictures of the artist or what they are related to from the caption below and a big picture at the top followed by the smaller ones around it.

Also I want to put a little editor caption like Kerrang has saying what is on next week. So that the reader can see and look forward to what’s happening in next week’s magazine. This is for publicity and making the reader wanting to read more, to make them buy it next time it comes out. I also want to change the colour of the yellow and black to red and black for the content and for 'this week' and for the numbers of the page as well. I want the writing of the stories to be in white, to keep with my 3 colour scheme.

I started of my content page by making the background black. I put in on In-design because it is easier to write and everything I want to change the masthead by just putting content page on the top instead of the masthead for the front page heading. Next lesson I want to add text and photos to make it look more like a magazine content page.

This is my final edit of my front cover; I put the posters at the bottom, the magazine cover to get them out of the way of the main photo. I had to edit the 3 photos by using hue- saturation. I also edited the background of the first 2 photos, because the one of Dan had low quality backgrounds. Also the one of Vivien I took the background out so that she stood out more. I put a border around the picture so that it stood out from the rest. I then put 'Free Poster' and put a drop down shadow which looks really effective and stands out from the posters.

I then made a caption for the main picture of left side. I made it in a different colour white so that it stood out from the dark colours. Also I moved the date to the top left hand side under the masthead so that it’s clear to see the date and the amount.

These photos I wanted her to look like she was screaming down a microphone I like these pictures because of the facial expression which was my aim to do because of my Analyse; I found that a lot of rock bands scream down the microphone.

In these photos I wanted to create her to look really worried and angry looking but in a way of a photo shoot. So that it doesn't look like she is live.

This is some pictures of different angles of the stage shot. This is so that I can make my pictures look at lot more live like.

I wanted to make her a jump stile so that it looks like she is jumping off the stage; I put her in this dress so that it gives a good jump. There is a couple of photos that she isn't jumping but I thought to put the in because they are like concert band, also she looks like she is in a band.

This lesson I added the headline ' Electric' and the story underneath and also I added a bar-code at the bottom right of the front page.

These photos are really dark this was because I didn't put the flash on because I wanted to try out what the photo turned out when there was no flash on the photo.

In these photos I wanted Danny to look like he was jumping off stage. I wanted to do this so that it created an effect I will use these photos for my content page and put a different background to it to make it more rock band like.

I took a picture of Danny, in college and I cut him out with the magic wand the quick selection tool. I cut him out because I didn’t want the college to be in the background of the photo. Also I have changed the colour of his pants by going on the paint brush tool and changing the flow and the amount of the colour and making it so that the colour blends in with the pants. So that it doesn’t look that obvious. I also haven’t finished it yet but I want to change the lighting of Danny's face because it is too bright at the moment. I have put the picture, of the park which I took on the SLR camera and put this as the background. Because it looks more appropriate considering that he is jumping. I want to go further and finish the bird on his top, red so that it fits more with my magazine.

research and planning: magazine

This is the start of my magazine, I have done the masthead and made it really big and also I have made a slogan underneath the masthead. But I changed the slogan from what I originally wanted to use it was because I thought that 'living on the wild side' reflected more to 'On Edge' more than the one I put in on my production schedule. I have also put a red background onto the back instead of white because the jacket is red and I want to use the 3 colour rule. I want to later put blue headlines on to the front cover to make it contrast with the masthead.

The pictures are the first thing you see on this double page spread. Is the blackout band doing different poses.The first one that stands out is the one on under the masthead. Also the masthead is really bold like the other one and also it had 'fuck' in red letters, which contrasts well with the black and white.


The picture of  Matthew Davis jumping pulling his tongue out grabs your attention and makes you want to read the story behind why he is jumping like that. Also I have noticed that the text is round the picture. The other photo that stands out is on the opposite page were Rhys Lewis is getting out of the picture, onto the other photo.


Also at the side of the photos the is a circle, at the side of the photo giving a paragraph about the person out of the band, and  for the different  photos there is a different story, to each of them.

layout:

The layout of the double page spread has 3 small photos of diffrent poses of steel panthers in Vegas and then on the right hand side there is a massive picture of the band in vegas. It really colourful and really eye catching for the reader. The the colour contrast is yellow and red and white which is the 3 colour code. Also the masthead of the double page spread is really big and  bold.

 Also at the side of the masthead there are two dice at the side of the masthead to indicate that Vegas is the gambling centre of America. Also there is bold small paragraph about the story to get you drawn into the story. Also there is a club at the bottom left hand corner, on what you normally see on a card this is also related to the gambling in Las Vegas.

The pictures are all of the band members in diffrent places from the casio, at the pool of there hotel, outside a wedding venue and then the massive big one outside the Vegas sign. Also one at the side of the big picture there is an added bit but isn't as much as on the oppisite page. Also under the picture is a sentence which is in black at the bottom of the picture telling you a little bit about it.

research and planning: diffrent fonts for my magazine

I have done some more fonts for my music magazine because I wasn't to sure if I still liked the original one, but now I have looked in more detail into my fonts I a have decided that I really like the second font that I have created on photoshop.


The first font I used was called phlegmy kilmister, I added a drop down shadow, to add effect also I increased the shadow so it stood out, I did this because I wanted it to stand out from the page on my magazine.


The second font I used a font called 'sex pistol'. I used this font because it stood out front the rest, I changed the colour to blue and put a drop down colour on this as well but made the distance a little less shadow instead of the other font.

The third font I used 'matura MT script capital' I used this because I wanted to change the whole of the font style I still used the drop shadow, but not a lot I dont think I will use this because it doesn't really look that indie.

the fourth font I like the colour because I think that blue or the red I will use because in my questionnaire that what most people associated with indie and rock bands them colours.

Colour scheme:

The colour scheme of the clothing really reflects well on the name of the band; the blackout. They are both wearing fully black and the action of the photo looks like they are having fun. The image is a medium long shot so that you can see the jump and so that you can see what the image is all about. The facial expression on both of the faces looks really serious like they are going to kill someone, which is also, is associated with black.

They have used the 3 colour scheme; yellow, blue and black. It makes the page stand out and it looks really unique as well. The colours that they have used, makes me think that they are trying to get a message across, like the colour yellow is represented as saying danger or caution leading up to the killing and frantic image.

research and planning: photos from Lees park

In this photo I wanted to make him look like he is singing live on a stage, this picture is really good quality because of the lighting. The down effect is that Adam is really bright so if I was to this photo I would have to contrast it and use Photoshop to make it less bright.

In this photo I wanted to make him look like he is about to jump, but also singing at the same time, because I have noticed that the music magazines and the people I have analyses different band members facial expressions and what I found was that they look really focused when they sing which I tried getting Adam to do.

In this photo I tried getting him to jump of  the platform. But unfortunately I am not going to use this photo, in my magazine because Adam is really bright and I have cut he shoes off.

Again I tried to make him look focused, I like how the background is pitch black well, I used the non- flash for this. I might use this photo for my double page spread which Adam will be on.

I don't think I will use this photo because I took it at the wrong time and even though it looks like he is singing
 it was done at the wrong time, and I don't really like it also the lighting is really bright on him as well because I put the flash on.

In this photo he is really bright and the white colour balance really shows in this photo, I might use this photo, but I will have to Photoshop it, because its too bright, and there is no photo in any Indie rock magazine, so will have to make some changes if I am going to use this photo.

This photo is good apart from the quality of lighting and I have cut his hand off, which I did bi-accident, because he was jumping in the air.

I really like this photo because it's in good quality and the lighting is perfect for an Indie rock magazine, I want to use this photo in my content page or my double page spread.

In this photo I used the night mode on the SLR camera to get the effects of the lights in the background, this photo is exactly what I want for my font cover because it has that aggression to it, it looks really Indie rock, and it also looks like he is singing as well.
